Artist of the Month: Melinda Bylow

From Precision to Play

For Melinda Bylow, art has always been a bridge. As a shy child, it was how she connected with classmates through hand-drawn cartoons; as an adult, it became the vehicle that pulled her out of a reserved shell and into a vibrant community of creators.

After a successful career as a corporate graphic artist—where "making exactly what I was told" was the daily standard—Melinda reclaimed her personal artistic voice in 2015. Since then, her work has evolved from the disciplined world of figure drawing into a soulful exploration of nature and abstract expression.

Whether you are a seasoned collector or just looking for a special gift, you’ll find one-of-a-kind treasures that you simply won't see in a big-box store.

Inspired by the Wild

Recently trading the bustle of Metro Detroit for the quiet forests of Luzerne, Michigan, Melinda finds her greatest "meditation" in the woods and on the water. An avid hiker and kayaker, her work is deeply informed by the minute details of the natural world.

"Little bits of nature are so beautiful. I tend to notice everything."

Her current portfolio reflects a fascinating tug-of-war between her self-described "detail-oriented" nature and a new, brave desire for looseness and emotion. This shift was accelerated by a shoulder injury that forced her to adapt her physical approach to painting, leading her to discover the freedom of abstract acrylics.

The Philosophy: No Rules, Just Experience

Melinda’s studio is a space of constant learning. Living with a small flock of parrots (who dictate her choice of fumes-free acrylics and watercolors), she approaches every canvas with a simple, refreshing goal: Fun.

  • On Motivation: "I just make a mark on the canvas or paper and react to it."

  • On Growth: "As soon as I am done with a painting, I’ve learned something new from it and I can move on."

  • On Community: Though she admits to a lingering shyness, Melinda’s work—which has already garnered local awards—is her way of inviting the community into her peaceful, nature-inspired world.

In Her Own Words

"Nothing is wrong or stupid in art as long as you enjoy doing it. NO RULES! Even if you don’t like your finished product, you had an art experience and learned from it. Everything you make has value."
